In June 2020, the G7 leaders got together here in the UK, and they pledged doses of vaccines to be made available to help with the growing problem of global inequity. At that time, there were already enough doses that have been deployed globally that could have prevented most of the deaths in the world that were to come. But the problem was that the doses have not yet been delivered all around the world, and most of the doses that have been deployed so far have gone to a very limited number of countries. Since that June G7 meeting over the subsequent months to the end of September 2021, another 1 million people have died globally, and by the end of the year the projection is that there will be further increase by another six hundred thousand deaths. This really is an appalling situation when we have enough doses in the world that we could prevent the vast majority of those deaths, if we were to be in a position to deliver them to those in greatest need. It's really important that leaders, political leaders, take note of this problem of global inequity and start sharing doses as soon as possible.
